Break my bones.

We've been hanging out at the museum pretty much every weekend lately. It's my time for quality time with the kids, and usually we'll meet up with and/or just run into some of our best friends while we're there.

Today was a pretty typical Sunday for us these days. Mad rush before church, some moments of peace and resolve at church, delicious brunch, and then a plan to spend 5 hours at the museum. Jonathan was on taxi duty today, dropping me and the kids off after brunch and then planning to pick us up at five.

We ran off our initial ERMAGERD WRR AT THE MUSERRRM excitement in SoundSpace, and then headed outside to... wait a minute... where's the playground? I had somehow not been paying enough attention to realize that the playground was going to be gone with the construction of Hideaway Woods. It's a good thing we got lots of playtime on the playground last time we were there. So, it was on to the farm with the goats in coats, and then back inside for some keva blocks and unit blocks and the latest favorite: big blue blocks!

The big blue block area has a comfy couch for tired moms, and the kids build whatever they want and climb all over and sort out spats over blocks and, you know, figure out their world through play. The moms can take turns running to the cafe for coffee. And that's exactly where I was, getting some iced coffee with Gideon, when Evelyn broke her wrist today.

I got back to the block room to see the other moms consoling Evelyn. She sat on my lap for a bit and then I decided to call Jonathan to come get us early. I was thinking we'd just go to urgent care because why not? We've met our deductible and it's that ALL THE MEDICAL CARE time of year. Evelyn climbed onto Ms. Brandi's lap so I could call Jonathan, and after some mommy magic from Ms. Brandi (i.e., juice to make the pain disappear), Evelyn promptly passed out on Brandi's lap. I was pretty sure she was just really tired, and the whole urgent care idea was probably overblown. But then Jonathan came and he was concerned enough to say let's just go, so go we did.

I was still pretty sure we were overreacting, but Evelyn was still clinging to her wrist and she was able to consistently point to where it really hurt and differentiate between painful and okay places when the doc examined her. They gave her some ibuprofen and took a few x-rays. By the time the doctor came in after reading the x-rays, Evelyn and Gideon were rolling around the room on the doctor's stool and Evelyn had started flapping her wrist just to show that she was fine. She was joking and back to being herself. The doctor looked at her and said, "So, you're seeing the ibuprofen working. That just means she can't feel what's actually going on." she pulled up the x-rays and asked us to try to see what was wrong with the picture, and even though I'm not that kind of doctor, it wasn't too difficult to point to the broken part. She has an ulnar fracture. They put a temporary splint and bandage on it, got her set up with a sling, gave the kids their choice of stickers, and sent us on our way with instructions to keep the ibuprofen coming and to keep in mind that tomorrow will probably be more painful than today. We'll be referred to a pediatric orthopedist for a cast sometime this week.

Evelyn was of course a champ about the whole thing. Apart from some tears when it happened, she was stoic throughout the evaluation and x-rays and splinting. I think she'll be pretty thrilled to get to choose the color of her cast and have all her friends sign it. I'll just live vicariously through her for that experience.
