Easy

Gideon has been here for just over one week. Today is the first day he won't be seeing any doctors - no heel pricks for bloodwork, no weight checks... nothing! I remember it took quite a while to have a doctor-free day with Evelyn too. I guess that's just how we are.

The boy can eat. And I am thankful every single time he latches on. Feeding Evelyn was a huge ordeal requiring at least four hands and a healthy dose of patience. Gideon latches on with very little struggle and no nursing paraphernalia (e.g., nipple shields, which only seemed to complicate things more when they had me use them with Evelyn). He eats and eats. I really don't even know how often or for how long, because I am not keeping track! And that is glorious. In the hospital I had to write down every feeding and every diaper, but since we left I haven't counted at all. When the ped asks me how many poopy and how many wet diapers in the last 24 hours, I estimate something reasonable. I know it's enough. It's the right color and all that. And Gideon is gaining weight really well (up six ounces in two days this week). So it's working. It is really incredible how much of a difference it makes to have a baby who can latch and nurse.

On Wednesday, Gideon was circumcised. We wanted to wait until we were out of the hospital and have it done at the doctor's office, so we did. Jonathan stayed with him for the procedure while Evelyn and I hung out in the waiting area. So far I think it's healing fine. I still think it looks incredibly painful, but thankfully he won't remember and it hasn't interfered with nursing or anything.

We also got the OK to discontinue the Bili Blanket for good on Wednesday. I am hoping that the home health company comes to pick it up today. Gideon is still a bit yellow but it will slowly fade over the next couple of weeks as he gets rid of all the extra bilirubin.

Yesterday he visited Poe Hall for the first time so I could return a library book. He got to meet a few professors and some of my classmates, although he slept through the whole thing.

That's about it for us. I'm dreading the impending return to work - not because I don't like work but because I think I could really get used to this being at home and snuggling with my baby stuff. I'm also able to stay on top of the laundry and keep the house at least a little bit tidy, which is nice. But I need to finish my internship at some point so I can get a job... so back I will go!

This is an exciting blog post to read! I'm so glad to hear that things are going so well with Gideon right now and that you're enjoying your time at home with both your little ones. How long do you have at home before going back to internship? 6 weeks?

Chelsea & Jonathan, Not sure my previous post got through. We are just so delighted with you/for you as you welcome this beautiful baby boy, Gideon Oliver (love his name) into the family. Thanks for sharing so much of your birthing story. My heart aches that you had some really difficult stretches of time, but rejoices with the outcome! More Congrats to come! Aunt Pat
