Change

Yesterday, as I was schlepping my more than 25-pounds* of laptop, books, files, papers, and whatnot in to school, one of the straps of my beloved bag snapped.

It was a sad moment indeed, but then I realized that I've used this bag every single day for the past three years (almost exactly - it was a graduation gift to myself after I got the MA). And for a $60 bag, 1000 days of hard work is pretty good. So I browsed around a little bit for a new bag. I read some reviews. I looked at some pictures. And then I ordered this:

Look familiar? Yeah. But see how I changed up the design? Now it's a distinguished bag. An intern's bag. A distinguished intern's bag...

Then earlier this evening, I took a spare moment** to look down at my foot and I realized that my dear, dear flip flops are getting quite worn down and sad-looking.

I thought, "Hey, wait a minute! Didn't I just by these?" Um, yeah. Three years ago. Right after we moved to NC. I haven't bought a pair of flip flops since. Now, mind you, I haven't needed to either. These particular flippy floppies are amazing. Trust me. I have worn them all over and I just can't go back to the old-school foam flops of yore. Anyway, I was feeling all flush what with the end of The Compact and some newfound cash (we paid off our car! No more car payments!***), so I ordered ... you guessed it - more of the same flips. But I also decided to try these:

in red.

And now you're all caught up on my purchases of late. Are you excited or what?!

Here are some other news tidbits for you:

- I successfully defended my dissertation proposal today. And I only almost-cried once during the meeting! And I was reminded of how entirely awesome my advisor is. How awesome is he, you ask? Entirely awesome.

- Evelyn's teacher stopped us on our way out of school today to tell us that Evelyn is so smart. She said that whenever they sing El Viejo Juancho (Old McDonald), Evelyn and her friend Meadow walk over and get the animals to go along with whatever animal sound they are making. Aquí oink, allí oink, en todos lados oink, oink. I love it.

And now for the fine print:

* I only know this because it always sets off the seatbelt alarm when I put my bag on the passenger's side. It feels like 50 pounds.

** A spare moment?! I know! I have somehow almost finished this semester and I'm noticing all sorts of extra moments appearing in my days. Where have these moments been for the past 16 weeks?

*** No car payments! Do a little dance with me! Come on, do it! But don't get too excited. We will soon have payments again as we have to get a second car before August when my internship starts. We knew this day would come, but it is sad. Even more sad since we can't get the Leaf we both really like. We've debated the Fit, another Prius, or just finding some kind of decent little used car with acceptable safety ratings for Jonathan and Evelyn to drive while I take the Prius on the long commute... No solid plans yet but we're open to suggestions!

I just love you so much. You really stepped outside the lines with the new bag. It's almost nothing like the old one... ; ) I wish it many years of service in your employ and it really does make you look more grown up. xoxo
