I'm about to start my written preliminary exams, also known as prelims.
What are they, you ask?
Well... from Monday, March 14th until Friday, March 25th I'll be writing responses to questions from my four dissertation committee members. They can pretty much ask whatever they'd like, and they can tell me what they'll ask in advance or not. They can give me as many hours or days as they want for their questions. So far, here's what I know:
1. Dr. Friendly will give me the full 12 days to do an extended article review. (3/14-3/25)
2. Dr. Calm will give me 48 hours to respond to two questions relevant to areas where information is missing or incomplete in my dissertation proposal document right now. (3/16 and 3/17)
3. Dr. Practical will give me 24 hours to develop and critique a clinical family intervention program. (3/23)
4. Dr. Mystery... is still a mystery. I'm not sure when or what I'll be doing for this one. The organizer and planner in me just loves that it's still up in the air with less than 24 hours before prelims start.
Once the writtens are done, I wait a while so my committee can determine whether I passed the written part. Then I meet in front of thefiring squad committee on April 4th at 11:00 AM for oral prelims. It's a two-hour meeting during which my committee can ask me anything and everything they want and I have to give acceptable responses.
The reward?
I get to propose my dissertation! Will the fun never end?!
I have to propose my diss before May 13th to be allowed to go on internship next year (if I'm offered an internship position). The deadline means that nothing can go wrong with my written or oral prelims, and no scheduling issues or emergencies can arise between now and May 13th. Fingers crossed, people.
In the meantime I still have coursework and clinic work and all that jazz. Oh and raising a baby who is dangerously close to walking. *Shew*
