I, Sisyphus.

Last weekend, I cheerfully announced to Jonathan and Evelyn, "I want to rake the yard."

I put in a few solid hours' work...

... and then a couple more most days this week...

... and quite a few hours this weekend...

And I now have close to 20 lawn bags full of pine needles. And an aching back.

And I'm just about halfway finished.

Then there's the front yard. And the gutters. And the patio and driveway and walkway. And all the while, those gorgeous loblolly pines that I fell in love with the first time I visited North Carolina continue to drop their needles.

Sisyphus, indeed. Raking up pine needles was a battle never won at our old house... hence the very large "pine needle mulch" bed in the front yard and the piles and piles of it in the back yard (across the ravine, out of direct sight). Thought we planned it that way? Naw, we're just lazy. We raked everything into that large bed every fall (or after a super windy storm that knocked bunches out of the trees). Then when there was more than 4" of stuff compacted there, we transferred it to the back.

Do you have any sweet gum trees in your yard? We hated picking up those seed balls even more than raking pine needles.

Good luck with your raking -- at least it's good exercise!

Those pine needles...and the leaves that aren't far behind...will turn anyone into Sisyphus. Fo' sho'.
