Yesterday brought plenty of excitement in our house. We went out for a tasty lunch, browsed around Home Depot to plan for our garage organization projects, and headed home for some pine needle raking (story on that later) and rest.Evelyn nursed and we were all just hanging out on the couch when... the vomiting began. We weren't worried at all. I took Evelyn to the tub so we could clean up, but... the vomiting continued. Still not really worrying. We got her dressed and she felt a little bit cold and was looking a bit pale, so we headed outside to lay in the hammock and read for a while. But still with the vomiting. And there really wasn't anything left in her belly, so she was struggling and just looking awful.
We decided to call the nurse line. Of course it was busy and the recording said to leave our number and someone would call back. By that point, Jonathan was holding Evelyn and she appeared to be passing out. She would just close her eyes and go soft and not really respond unless we vigorously tried to wake her. Our plan was to head to the urgent care center, but she seemed to be quickly getting more and more out of it. Jonathan checked her breathing and said it was really shallow and that was it - to the hospital.
We got to Duke and, contrary to my belief that they should be RUSHINGMYBABYBACKANDCHECKINGHEROUT! We waited in line and then took a seat in the waiting area. E continued to vomit, or to try to, and it was not pleasant at all. They called us back to take her vitals and she showed the nurses that she was indeed ill - so on went a toe monitor of some sort and back to the waiting room we all went.
Finally, we went to the children's side of the emergency department and met a couple of nice doctors and nurses and Evelyn pretty quickly started to look and act like herself. They did their checks and monitored her heart just in case, but nothing really seemed amiss. We felt better when the doctor said that we did the right thing to bring her in (because of the "altered mental state" and not so much the vomiting, which we know is okay unless it lasts for a very long time). And we were finally dismissed.
So, Evelyn is fine and we are fine. And now we have a practice run under our belts so we'll be old pros next time we have to visit an emergency department (which we hope is never... but kids do crazy things sometimes).
