Today we bought a washer, dryer, and fridge for the new place.
We agreed that red was the only acceptable color for our washer and dryer (with pedestals - thanks for the tip, Mary!).

These purchases made us start thinking more about the house and how we'd like to see it come together. After years and years of sterile white walls, we're both itching for some color. Some serious color. But what to do when your appliances are already a bit loud?
Paint it gray.

I was trying to think of something to go with the red that wasn't white or beige of some sort, but also wasn't yellow or green or something way too overwhelming. And then Jonathan's mom suggested gray. I remembered Abby saying that it was a good wall color, and that was that.
We haven't gone shopping yet so I'm not sure exactly which shade of gray we'll use, but I know we'll stick with gray for our little laundry closet area. The closet also has several shelves that I'd like to paint gray - either a bit lighter or a bit darker than the gray on the walls. Which would you recommend (lighter or darker)? The painting needs to be complete and dry by May 8th, which is delivery day for the appliances. (Hence the reason for starting the home decorating projects with the laundry area.)
But I can't have these gorgeous appliances and gray walls left all alone, right? So here are some inspiration photos for what I'd like to see (ignore wall colors here...):

Visions of glass jars filled with clothespins and Charlie's soap, and baskets with our stain removers and various other laundry-related things dance in my head:

(P.S. If you have any leads on those cool locker baskets that don't cost an arm and a leg, please let me know!)
Oh, I also want to remove the bi-fold doors on the laundry closet/alcove area because they remind me too much of apartment life. I'm thinking we'd replace them with curtains in white - something like these? What do you think? Then I could have some sort of fun tie/hold-back on either side of the opening for them if I wanted them open.
So that's the plan for now. Let me know if you have any thoughts or ideas!

I love the look you are working towards.
Oh yea! And the white curtain: Very cool.

Pardon the lurking (and the unsolicited advice). I often find myself hopping from Abby's blog to yours. And since we share a nephew...does that sort of make us family? :)
At any rate, this post caught my attention because we are in the midst of sprucing up our laundry closet as well. I wanted to share 2 things:
1. Some good ideas here: http://www.younghouselove.com/2007/11/spin-city/
2. I too wanted to ditch the bi-folds for the curtain look; however, decided against it due to a very inquisitive 16-month old. Just something to consider: most front loading wash machines (as we have) recommend leaving the door slightly ajar in order to avoid a common problem of mold and the odors that accompany it. With only a curtain as a buffer I had visions of smashed fingers and toddler tumbles into the wash machine. Not saying the same would be true for Evelyn, but wanted to throw it out there as you consider your options.
Speaking of Evelyn...what a gorgeous baby you have. I was following along and hoping the best for you. My experience was eerily similar (the whole preeclampsia, go to the hospital now and have this baby 4 weeks early thing.) :)
So happy for the 3 of you and what fun you have ahead as you start your life in your first home!
Again, sorry for hijacking your blog.

i have to agree with heidi on the curtain issue. another problem i see with the curtain is noise. depending on where your laundry closet is located, noise is a consideration. maybe you could do a pocket door or french doors that you line on the inside with a white curtain. also, i love the pictures you included of the various storage solutions. there are a million different fun and functional ways you can go when addressing storage. i personally love the baskets and jars idea! anyway, there's my 2 cents, for what it's worth...about 2 cents! can't wait to see pictures when you're finished. xo
