Doughman, Part II

Well, readers, I forgot my camera. But I don't think I would have had time for photos anyway. We woke up before the sun on Saturday morning and headed to Durham for the second annual Doughman Competition. After some tent setup and milling around, Jonathan and I were assigned our first volunteer tasks: I was to mark each team's designated support vehicle with the respective team number, and Jonathan was to direct traffic toward the parking area and to be a traffic cop once the race was underway so the runners did not just run right into traffic between Blu and Elmo's as they crossed 9th Street. We were both busy with our tasks, but I was lucky enough to get to watch the start. Nothing like 51 people shoveling the crab mac 'n cheese with a fried egg on top and then bolting to their next destination.

We did some quick clean-up and walked across the street to Dain's Place, a small bar where the third stage of the race began with tagged runners sprinting in to the restaurant for their portable defibrillator sandwiches (detailed in previous post). For the volunteers, this stop involved lots of bussing, refilling waters, and listening to Weird Al's "Eat It" on repeat for about an hour. Oh, and Jonathan was on the corner directing the runners after they finished eating to head to Daisy Cakes (nevermind that he didn't really know how to get to Daisy Cakes from 9th and Markham... hope no one got lost!).

You can read the N&O recap here, and see their slideshow here.

After a long morning, we headed to Elmo's for some breakfast and then came home to rest and gather energy for a few more hours' work at the "Doughman hEArTs Durham" banquet Saturday night. Again, no pictures, but it was a really cool event. It was held at the Durham Farmer's Market pavillion, and tons of local businesses were there with all sorts of food. As volunteers, we got in free and tried a little bit of everything: beer from the Triangle Brewery, apple and cheese pizza from Pop's, coq au vin from Rue Cler, chocolate from Dolly Mama, fries from Only Burger, soup from Blu, and of course some Locopops and Boylan sodas for good measure. It was a gorgeous evening, too! Just perfect.

I think Jonathan enjoyed everything in the end. We both got two shirts (one with the above shoe logo - sweet), food, and a really fun experience. Maybe next year there will be a team Bartel in the event!
