There's no place like home.

I've been hearing reports of it all day.

The peaceful, clean, quiet powder. Falling softly.

The icy roads, the anticipation of getting off work or school early.

It's snowing in Kansas. Back home. And I miss it more today than I think I ever have.

Sure, Kansas takes some flack every now and then. It's a red state, a bible-belt state, a place that everyone I meet out here seems to vaguely recall driving through but not stopping to experience. But I do miss it.

Don't get me wrong, I love it here. I love the trees. I really love the ocean. I love our place. I love being near family even though we're far away from home. I even love the cell phone towers poorly disguised as giant pine trees. (In Kansas, they sometimes disguise these towers as GIANT flag poles, by putting a ball on the top and attaching a huge American flag...)

But I spent some formative years in the sunflower state. I won't go on about it now because I have a paper to write, but suffice to say that I miss it today.

The wind has been howling and blowing ferociously all day. I had to scrape ice off the car twice (as I had to make a trip into work this afternoon). I had to sweep the porch three times -- with a broom that is broken and very frustrating because of that. I was wearing awful looking heated gloves that my husband bought me (because he loves me and wants me to have warm hands). I carried wood into the house to start the first fire of the year in the fireplace -- but it is a lovely warm fire this evening. And we ate wonderful homemade chicken noodle soup that I prepared inside my warm house today. We also had homemade wholewheat bread and rolls to go with it. It is still blowing outside and is supposed to get down to 17 degrees tonight. The roads will be frozen over in the morning......I have to make a trip to the hairdresser tomorrow afternoon. I hope it is better by then. I would love to have you here by the fire with us tonight, but am hoping for some clear roads when we head your way next week. Just depends on your perspective I guess.
