I had started to tire of the beloved ATT with its regular reminders of how far I had(n't) run and it's out-and-back setup. I thought, "Hey! Wouldn't it be fun to try something different for our fourteen mile run on Saturday?"
Famous almost-last words.
The route was definitely different. We meandered around the Duke Med Center and then went off-roading around the Duke University Golf Course. There was a trail skirting the course for a couple of miles. I thought, "Hey! We should do some more (unpaved) trail running to prepare for our little jaunt through Nag's Head Woods Preserve during the marathon!"
Famous my-running-partners-might-murder-me-for-this words.
Well, the trail was nice and shady. I'll give it that. It was also BRUTAL for my grossly undeprepared hammies, quads, glutes, calves, feet, toes, and brain. I thought to myself, "Oooooh, so this is why hill training is important. Maybe skipping those hill workouts these past two weeks was not such a brilliant plan after all..."
That theme continued as we left the Golf Course trail and wondered through some residential areas. The theme being: it's about 105 degrees outside and surely at least 80% humidity and we keep running hills. (The temperature was an accurate reflection of my perceptual experience, though perhaps just a bit higher than the actual tempterature.)
We somehow trudged through downtown to our last gatorade stop and then went as fast our feet would take us to the end. Our feet were walking - but hey, that's better than not moving at all! I'll take what I can get.
Here's a little somethin for your from Married to the Sea. (Oh and that site's not entirely family-friendly so don't say I didn't warn you! I do find it quite hilarious.)
