MT: Happy Trails!

We've become tired of our tried and true Tuesday/Thursday running route, which took us along part of the Rock Quarry Trail and into the Central Park neighborhood. So on Tuesday we mixed things up by running somewhere new along a busy street. It was fine, but I think I've become spoiled with all smooth footing on the trail running - actually having to navigate things like curbs and uneven pavement while gulping down exhaust fumes left me tired. (Well, more tired than I already am after forcing myself to run four miles.)

Today's route, however, was much better. We decided to check out the American Tobacco Trail, which is a 22-mile path following an abandoned railroad track (a railroad built originally for the American Tobacco Company). The trail is clean, quiet, patrolled by police, and - my favorite - relatively flat! It's gorgeous, with all the kudzu ("the vine that ate the South") you could ever want to see. There are also really nice posts marking every mile, and painted markers every quarter mile. The only bad thing was the large, decapitated rat we saw as we started our run... but those things happen even on the best of trails. I think we might be doing our 10-mile run on the trail this weekend, so I'll let you know what else we see.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that it was 75 degrees with 87% humidity at 6:30 this morning. Keep in mind that when you run, you should dress for 10-20 degrees warmer than the actual temperature because that's how warm you'll get. We were all sufficiently drenched in sweat by the end of the workout.

And today concludes our first full month of Marathon Training. That leaves three full months and one week before the race!

Inspirational thought:

Ask yourself: "Can I give more?". The answer is usually: "Yes".

Hi Chelsea and Jonathan,

Glad you enjoy the American Tobacco Trail, also affectionately known as the ATT. ;-) Lots of folks have worked hard to make it happen.

We're delighted that so many are happily enjoying it and using it for such great pursuits as marathon training.

For more info on the ATT, go to www.triangletrails.org .

You can find a great map of the ATT and your old haunt, the Ellerbee Creek-North South Greenway, as well at the site as well.

Also, be sure to check out the sections of the trail down in Wake and Chatham counties. The surface on the 6.5 miles of trail in Wake is compacted granite screenings so it is easier on the ankles and knees than the asphalt surface in Durham.

If you care for a little more uneven surface continue north from Wake into Chatham on our grass gravel and clay surfaced trail that TRTC volunteers maintain. While it is a bit uneven for a few hundred feet about 500 feet north of the Chatham/Wake line, the rest is actually quite nice north to the currently undecked Panther Creek trestle.

Running from the southern end north to the Panther Creek trestle will give you a 8 1/4 mile one way run on a trail largely in cool canopy. Not a bad training run 'eh!

Enjoy the trail. Please let me/us know if you have any questions or comments.
