On praise

I've been working my way through this article from New York Magazine, titled "How Not to Talk to Your Kids." It was published about a year ago, but I just ran across a link to it on the net and I've found it fascinating so far. One of the main proposals is that there is harm in telling children they are smart, and that it's better to praise their effort.

I've heard this many times before. In my experience (with students), it does really work. But I, too, have found it hard to not provide the general praise. I reassure myself though that the specific praise I provide is more thoughtful and therefore more meaningful.
