You can dance if you want to.

Evelyn had her first dance class today! After many visits and a great deal of over thinking, we decided to go with a ballet/tap class for this year. She's taking class at a little studio recommended by my supervisor, where there's just one teacher who teaches every class/age group. Today in Evelyn's class there was only one other little girl. As expected, she loved it.

She's been waiting for ages to put her special dance bag to use! The Easter Bunny brought it to her this year. The Easter Bunny sure knows how to plan ahead (and find bargains at TJ-Maxx).

The teacher was great. I couldn't hear anything, but you know I was standing at the observation window staring the entire time. I saw them doing stretches and talking about something related to posture, and after the class Evelyn was very excited to tell me about how they were pretending to balance a stinky glass of milk on their heads. Love it. I figured the teacher was telling them to pretend that they were wearing princess crowns or something, but stinky milk was a thousand times better.

"There's no stinky milk on my head!"

Evelyn was quite focused during the class. The most difficult thing they did was some kind of walking practice thing with tap shoes. It might have an actual name but I wouldn't know it. So it involved walking across the dance floor two ways: first with a really exaggerated heel-toe movement, and then with an exaggerated toe-heel movement. After a few tries, she nailed the heel-toe rhythm, but switching to toe-heel required some tongue-sticking-out concentration.

You can just make out the butterfly stamp on top of her left foot.

I was so happy that dance class lived up to all of the anticipation that has preceded it over the past months.

Oh yeah, I'm sure I'll try out different variations, but today's version of the bun involved little ponytails in a circle all around the head, which were then pulled up into the bun and/or clipped up as close as possible to the bun. Her hair is still so short! I was pretty pleased with how well this style withstood a full day of preschool and a hard nap immediately before dance class. I just had to do minor straightening/re-clipping and she was good to go.

So the first dance class is in the books. Away we go.
